FORGIVENESS (traumas from my childhood and teenage years)

Submitted on Apr 26, 2011 by  MariaHIVMejia

I remember my first memory at the age of three, unlike some children that have wonderful memories of their childhood mine was a very traumatic one! I was molested by a family member at such a young age...It is hard to open up about this, because it has impacted my life in so many ways..I was a baby..no one is supposed to hurt a child! And the damage stays with you forever!

[[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":null,"attributes":{"class":"media-image alignleft size-medium wp-image-790","typeof":"foaf:Image","style":"","width":"148","height":"300","title":"maria_child","alt":""}}]]With all of this I had to endure, along with my mother, the mental abuse and verbal abuse of my father throughout all my childhood and teenage years...this was very hard! The man that was supposed to protect me and love me was a tyrant! Someone who from the age of five, six years old always told me I would only be good to be a whore and I was never going to amount to anything in life! After you hear this for so long...you start believing you are a nothing! And that is what  I felt about myself (A NOTHING)!  I did not only have to hear this almost every day, but I had to hear my father cursing and offending my mother all the time! If she cooked for him the same type of food twice, he would throw it in her face and tell her the whore of your mother will eat that! I remember being in the dining room table and making sure there was always something big in the center of the table so I wouldn't have to see my father's face.

My mother married very young, she was 18 and my father was 42 years old. He brought her from my country, Colombia, to the United States...she didn't know anyone here, had no family and didn't know the language! A perfect scenario to abuse someone! It was just my mother and I...she would cry so much! And me, as that sad little girl, would try to comfort her by hugging her..I didn't know what else to do. :(  I would tell my mom almost everyday... "how can i kill him?" Imagine that!? At the age of 6!! She would just say, 'please don't say that..I will go to school and I will leave him...' My little brother came along..so her school had to be paused! He never wanted her to work or go to school, so it was a perfect excuse for him! He said, 'NO MORE school until both kids are in school and you have taken care of the house!' So my mother had to wait! God how much I remember hating my father! I would hear him at night screaming at my mother! And I would would put my little head under the pillow and cry so I wouldn't have to hear him! He affected me so much! And the saddest  thing is he does not realize all the damage that he has done till this day! As the years passed and I started getting a little older...around 13/14, I started acting out in school, hanging with the wrong crowd. And my mom was already going to school, but something bad was building inside of me! I wanted to explode! The abuse always continued! It never stopped with my father! I remember when he would go away on business trips we would be so happy for him to leave! And when he returned, it was torture. :( I hated it!! Isn't that sad? That when your own father leaves you are happy and when he returns, instead of giving us love he abused us. :( I couldn't even cry in front of him! When he was cursing at me for no reason or at my mother, he would threaten me and say, 'IF YOU CRY, I WILL BEAT YOU!'  Why couldn't I have a normal dad ? Oh well...that is life! At least I have a wonderful mother!!  He loved my brother, though! He always wanted a boy! He had been married like 5 times and had all girls! All of my step sisters went through this with him! And their mothers! We all have been affected by him and they all ended up leaving him!

Sometimes I would hear him say, 'why don't you f**king leave with your daughter, and I will stay with my son!' If he only knew how much this hurt me! I felt unwanted and so hurt ...but all of this would come to an end soon!

My mother was afraid of him, and he always threatened her with taking my little brother! She felt she didn't have sufficient funds to take care of us until she had a degree...so I started pressuring her more and more everyday to leave him! I would ask her when she picked me up from school...is my dad home? She would say, YES! I hated it...I immediately had so much anxiety just to know he was home! Because I knew he would start picking at anything and fight fight fight!! In school they started noticing my behavior and they advised I would see a counselor. So as a family, my father agreed and we started going...he would be good for maybe 2 weeks and he would start again! Until one day he stopped going with us...so it was my mother and I with the counselor...I don't remember what happened that evening...but I exploded and ran away from there! To the streets! A few weeks back I got a little card from school saying if you are abused at home call this shelter. And I kept the card! I ran and ran...it was so dark! it was like i was running for my life...I got to a public phone crying, and called the number. They picked me up and that is when I entered the foster care system...but by that time I was already damaged! I didn't want anyone to tell me anything! I was full of hate! I became a juvenile delinquent..and always ran away from every foster home they put me in! They didn't even want me, because they said I was a bad influence on the other children! So no one wanted me! By this time I had accused my father of all the things that he did and he left back to Colombia! It was the perfect time for me to come back home, right? What I always dreamed of! But it was too late! I didn't want to go back home..I made my mother suffer so much! It's like I became my father! I was abusive to her and to my little brother! I felt so jealous of him! And this is because of what my father did to me, I believe..always he was the good one and I was the bad one! So I would be home for a while and then I would run away again. I was lost in this world!

I found a new family, a gang! The latin deciples! I soon became the girlfriend of the leader...who was my first boyfriend and who would eventually infect me with the HIV virus! He was experimenting with IV drug use and I didn't  know it! I was around 16! Another man in my life that hurt me! My uncle, my father, and my first boyfriend! These are men who were supposed to protect me, not hurt me! I eventually came back home with much more trauma and my mother accepted me! When the police brought me back home, they told my mother, 'Listen ma'am! This is your daughter, you have to take her! No one wants her..there is no place for her. But I will give you some advice, when she turns 18 throw her out to the street! Because she is NOTHING but trouble!'

Again a nothing!! As my father always taught me. :( So my mom accepted me back after all I did to her and made her suffer! Now it was my brother who didn't want to be around me :(  because I would have crazy attacks...I would cut myself! So many terrible things that I am not even sharing right now! My mother was so afraid of me and my violence!

Soon after, something happened and I said I need to fix my life and go to school...turn my life around! So much things happened to me in the streets! So much more abuse..I was just tired of everything and wanted to get away! So I enrolled in Job Corp in Kentucky..I was excited to start a new life! and my mother was happy for me too. :) So I left from Miami to Kentucky...and there is when I was diagnosed with the HIV virus! I couldnt believe it!! After all I had been through and finally seeing a little light! Bam! I get hit with this news!! I was just turning 18 :( my life was over I thought!

Sometimes I think to myself, maybe I would not be HIV positive if I would have never ran away from my father! This was 20 years ago and here I am still kicking!!!

Where am I now? I have forgiven my uncle, my father, and the person who infected me who is dead right now...As far as my uncle, I still have to see him every year that I go visit my mom in Colombia. This is very hard, but I endure it! I have never confronted him. My father, well, I continue to have daddy issues! I learned about his own childhood and there is where I came to the conclusion why he is the way he is... that he is also a very sick man! As I said before, if you ask him he will tell you he was the best father ever! He will never change and I gave up on that idea! I don't hate him anymore..I love my father no matter what! But I can't be around him because he is toxic to me! So I love him and pray for him from a distance...and most likely if he gets ill, I will be there for him! Only then will I ever come close to him again! And that is just the person that I am..I have a huge heart!

As far as the person who infected me, he was a teenager himself and I believe he didn't know he was infected...So with everything said, I have come so far in these last 20 years that I have been living with the virus...it could have broken me, but I am a warrior, a very strong woman! It made me more spiritual, it taught me to love more! Have more compassion and empathy towards others!

Sometimes I feel like finding out I was positive saved my life in many ways! I am a survivor and a loving human being! I am something! I am important! Even though sometimes I can go back to that dark place when I was a little girl, I am a work in progress! And the most important thing that has helped me sooooo much is forgiveness...Letting go of the hate and anger! Only when we forgive those who hurt us we start to heal! It is not easy and it is a process. As always I am sending everyone lots of love and light!

Maria, thank you for sharing your story. I'm sure it is very difficult to talk about. You ARE a very strong woman. I have gone through a lot of things in my life also. Like the Bible says, God turns what Satan meant for bad and evil, and to destroy us, into good, so that we can help someone else that may be going through the same thing. I think God knew you were strong, and that someday you would be helping others to make it through. Your heavenly father, God, is very proud of you and wanted you very much. Your life is a testimony to so many hurting people that are going through things, that if you can come through it, so can they. I am proud of you, for turning your life into something good, out of something so devastating. You were born with a purpose. You may never know how many people you are touching and helping. Forgiveness takes strength and Gods help, I know, especially when it involves something so horrible. Your earthly dad may not have wanted you, but your heavenly father had plans for you. You were born for a purpose. Keep up the good work, and never forget.....you ARE loved, wanted and needed by God, and so many others. :)

As I said in my personal little note to you, Maria, all that you’ve shared has simply helped me know why you’re the woman I loved and admired from the moment we crossed path. I immediately knew you were no ordinary person. Now I simply know some of the background that you had to overcome to get to extraordinary.

You overcame what life threw at that beautiful little baby girl ... you miraculously chose to live a strong, positive, courageous and loving life, despite it all.

My love is with you ... even over 1200 miles ~

What a world of differences, you are really a light to others.
I do not really know what to say, but i believe nothing JUST happened... it always for a purpose.
All your traumas were destined for a PURPOSE and the purpose i believe is to LIGHT UP people's life . So Maria keep lighting... Much Love to you.
