The New Face of HIV

Submitted on Aug 17, 2010 by  jae001

I have been thinking back to when I was diagnosed, almost 19 years ago. I have fooled most people. They look at me and see just another 40 year old. An average healthy adult with kids, bills, a job and school work. I am just amazed that prejudices are still there. I am angry that I can’t wear a t-shirt with the quote on it that states: “The New Face of HIV.” I want to scream it from the roof. We as women need to get together and get this information to our daughters!

An article by the CDC states: “…even though more men than women have HIV, women are catching up. In fact, if new HIV infections continue at their current rate worldwide, women with HIV may soon outnumber men with HIV.”

This should motivate us as women, and mothers to take a stand and speak up for the future generations. It would be nice to be an activist to find the cure. I feel this is something that is preventable. We have the knowledge to prevent this. It starts at home.

But sometimes we don’t get to do whatever we want to do. Sometimes we have to do what’s best for others. I don’t want my family to suffer from my selfishness to be heard. I don’t want to jeopardize my husband’s career. I don’t want my children to be ostracized. So for now I speak to my children and my nieces and nephews how this can be avoided. I hope that they take my advice, because it might save their life someday.

I am glad that I have an outlet here. Thank you all for being there. Jae

Jae,
Your voice is being heard way past your closest family members and because of your courage and true concerns about this pandemic, many are being motivated to follow your example, including me. I met you through a HIV class I took in school close to a year ago by choice and I have learned so much and communicated all these info to my closest friends and family members and you have been part of my growing, emotionally and intectually. I am very happy I to have met you and that now I am part of something bigger than me, and that I could help to the cause by informing a few more with the true facts about this disease. Your are not in it alone and little by little we could help the cause by continuing to create awareness especially through our kids which then tell other their friends and the message will spread forward.

Dear Jae
Please may i ask members to help me through this? Can you tell me when is the best time to start taking ARV drugs? My doctor said it is best to start immedietly one is found to be HIV positve no matter how high the CD4. I am very very scared of starting the drugs especially since i happen to be taking drugs for depression. What do i do? Can the drugs be changed if found to be unsuitable for one? I am going through a very tough time and your letter are what is helping me many a times. Thank you
G.

I am not a doctor. But I would trust what your doctor is saying. There are many combinations of drugs that they have and they can test you to to find the medications that will work best for you. Talk to your doctor about Phenotyping & Genotyping to find the best regimine for you.

Good Luck! Be a part of your heathcare!
