The Well Project, a non-profit organization working to change the course of the AIDS pandemic through a unique and comprehensive focus on women, received two prestigious business awards this week for their Web portal.
On November 12th, The Well Project received a Stevie® Award for Women in Business for Best Website of the Year and was also chosen for an InfoWorld 100 Award in the health care category.
“We are deeply honored to receive these awards and are humbled to have been considered with the other organizations in our categories, which included representatives from all sectors of business, technology and community service,” said Dawn Averitt Bridge, Founder and Chair of the Board, The Well Project. “Our goal in creating this website was to make information about HIV and AIDS readily accessible and usable for any woman who might need it. These awards demonstrate the success we have had in doing so.”
The Stevie Awards considered more than 800 nominations from companies of all sizes and in virtually every industry. The InfoWorld 100 Awards honor IT projects that demonstrate the most creative use of cutting-edge technologies to further their business goals.
The Well Project develops resources and partnerships to educate, nurture and support the community of HIV-positive women, their caregivers and health care providers. The organization also advocates for new research and treatments, promotes better standards of care, furthers public awareness and education about HIV disease among women and connects people in search of a trusted, supportive and protected environment.
The Well Project’s comprehensive Web portal (www.thewellproject.org) provides easy-to-understand, accurate and current information about HIV and AIDS for women and their caregivers, addressing all important medical and personal issues facing HIV-positive women. The Web portal features more than 140 fact sheets, data sets and presentations, and receives 63,000 unique visitors each month, from more than 180 countries around the world. The site is currently available in both English and Spanish and will become available in French in 2008. The Well Project has embarked on a full globalization plan to make the content available in additional languages, which will be implemented by 2010.
“There is a mistaken belief that AIDS is no longer a problem in the United States, but with an estimated 20,000 women diagnosed with HIV every year, the need for accurate, accessible information about how to prevent and treat HIV has never been greater,” said Ms. Averitt Bridge.
It is estimated that between 300,000 and 500,000 women in the United States are living with HIV.
The Well Project is an Atlanta-based national non-profit organization that bridges research, resources and relationships to change the AIDS pandemic’s effect on women around the world. The Well Project addresses three critical gaps in the HIV and AIDS arenas: information access, treatment research and community support.
The Well Project was founded by Dawn Averitt Bridge and her brother Richard Averitt in 2002. Ms. Bridge was diagnosed with HIV in 1988 at age 19 and has since become one of the nation’s most prominent HIV and AIDS treatment advocates, as well as a sought-after speaker and published writer on women’s health issues. Dawn has developed programs to increase HIV and AIDS awareness, accelerate treatment research, promote better standards of care and expand clinical trials to include women. Under the Averitts’ leadership, The Well Project has moved to the forefront of the global fight against HIV and AIDS.
