Well, where do I start? First of all, I am super proud in the wonderful opportunity I was given to be The Well Project's Global Ambassador. I continue to be on their CAB and of course my first love...blogging :) They really look out for us bloggers and make sure that we are trained and educated so the information that we are putting out is accurate and we can share it with our community.

I only knew that CROI was the most important scientific conference in the world for scientists, researchers and doctors. Including us (the community) was a very big deal, because this is not a social or community conference. However, they are starting to understand that we--the patients, advocates and activists--are the bridge between them and community. I am not going to lie...many things were alien to us (Kate, my roommate and the first blogger for A Girl Like Me). I am a very proactive patient and I have studied and read a lot as far as medical terminology and I love science :) I want to be an Infectious Disease doctor!I Doesn't hurt that some of my best friends are top HIV doctors and researchers in this field ;) so if I don't understand anything, I ask them!

Many people want to know about the cure. Well, the reality and everything they said is what we all have been hearing…around 10 to 15 years. Many people are dedicating their lives to find us a cure, and as we know with science anything may happen--and maybe we might get a cure sooner.

We also heard a lot of information on PrEP...ALOT! I learned that researchers are doing studies to see if PrEP can be effective even if not taken every single day. Even though there are some promising early results, more research is needed and it is still important to take daily for it to be most effective. I believe the more adherent you are, the better! I asked over and over that WOMEN need to be included! We know MSM are at higher risk, but us women are a part of this too and we do not want to be excluded! I asked if it was true that they are studying PrEP for teens, and they said this is correct (click here for a trial I was referred to on this). I am on the fence on that one. I need to research more. :) We are on our way to one day having injectable ARVs maybe once a month, just like with birth control ;). I can't wait!! I believe they are trying to do this with PrEP, too, for better adherence. I am all for having extra tools, but making an informed choice. I had numerous conversations with doctors and researchers that told me as they also spoke about in the sessions that just like birth control was demonized, this is also happening with PrEP. And people are being labeled 'Truvada Whores' because they want to have healthy sexual lives and prevent HIV??!! Keep in mind that condoms should be used to prevent other STls and being undetectable makes it very unlikely to transmit the HIV virus (known as treatment as prevention).

I was personally very interested in HIV inflammation and our gut!! HIV inflammation happens almost as soon as we get infected and HIV medications help us with it. As far as having a healthy gut, it is very important! Take probiotics. A researcher from Canada told me to buy a specific probiotic online that has like 400 billion bacteria. HIV attacks the lining of our gut and that is where bacteria can enter and get us sick! We need to take care of our gut!! Super important!

Socially, I got to meet and also see old friends and very interesting people that have dedicated their lives to our cause. :) We met with Dawn Averitt (The Well Project founder) who made us feel so welcome!! She is one special human being and has dedicated her life to create safe spaces for us. I am so proud to be a part of this team :) We also met with other wonderful and dedicated women that are a part of The Well Project as well and are continuously fighting for us women, Jenna and Jennifer. :) We were also a part of a panel for women's issues in the United States for IFARA and other Medi!! Women will be heard!!

It was just a wonderful experience! I hope to continue learning and I want everyone to know, especially those that feel that we are being forgotten, that we have thousands of people, if not more, dedicated to eradicating HIV! Don't lose hope! :) I was around 4000 of them and I saw their passion and commitment. Next stop is A PSA for CDC and AIDS Watch in Washington DC in April where we will speak to congress too!

Much love and light,

Maria T Mejia

No puedo esperar!!

Mucho amor y luz,
Maria T Mejia

I am very proud of you and Kate and really wish I could have been there.  Attending scientific conferences can be overwhelming as there is so much information being discussed and often times the researchers speak a different language.  But you are right, there are thousands of researchers working to find a cure, to improve our health outcomes, and to prevent new infections.  We live in an amazing world where new possibilities are right around the corner.  As I celebrate 30 years of living with HIV, I am often reminded of how far we have come and all the work that has been done to give me and others the opportunity for one more day on this earth.  I am blessed and thankful for each day.  Love you all - Vickie
