Tonia Poteat, PhD is the Ruby L. Wilson Distinguished Professor in the Duke University School of Nursing, Associate Director of the Duke Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) Developmental Core, and Faculty Co-Director of the Duke Sexual and Gender Minority Wellness Program. She founded and co-leads the Inter-CFAR Community Working Group (formerly the Transgender Health Scientific Working Group). Her community-engaged research focuses on HIV and LGBTQ health with particular attention to the wellbeing of transgender communities. Certified as an HIV Specialist by the American Academy of HIV Medicine and Gender Specialist by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, she has devoted her 30+ years of clinical practice and 15+ years of research to advancing health justice. She currently provides HIV care for adults and adolescents in the UNC Infectious Diseases Clinic.
