Richard Adkins is a 35-year-old lifetime survivor based out of the Washington DC area. His advocacy began at the age of 13 when he served on the Adolescent Trials Network, where he collaborated with doctors and researchers on how to improve youth engagement and understanding of clinical protocols. Since then, Richard has partnered with several organizations such as the Maryland Coalition on HIV and Aging, Montgomery County Community advisory board, PAVE CAB, Heterosexual Men's Special Interest Group, Icons and Rising Stars, and more.
Richard specializes in combining lived experience, storytelling, and an analytical insight to drive systems change. He has educated providers, advocated to governmental bodies, and empowered people living with HIV to not just survive but to thrive. In 2024, he received the Mary Bowman award from DC Health for service towards ending the HIV epidemic. These days his advocacy focuses on HIV and aging among lifetime survivors, ensuring we receive attention, resources, and support as we age.
