Laramie R. Smith is an Associate Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. As a social psychologist, her community-engaged research applies social and behavioral theory from a public health perspective to examine individual and socio-structural contexts (e.g., stigma, substance use, social networks) implicated in improving health equity among people living with HIV and substance-involved communities. Across this work, Laramie maintains an intersectional focus on gender, ethnic/racial, sexual, and substance use identities; and the mechanisms through which related social determinants manifest to undermine engagement in HIV prevention and treatment services.
