A Girl Like Me (AGLM), a program of The Well Project, is a blog where women ( cis and trans The Well Project serves women across the gender spectrum. (More about gender identity)) can share their experiences and promote understanding of HIV. Millions of women around the globe are living with HIV, yet many feel they are alone in their disease and isolated in their day-to-day experiences. The goals of AGLM are to help normalize HIV; and to create a safe space for women living with HIV from around the world to speak out and share their experiences – with each other, and with those seeking a support community.

A Girl Like Me at the PWN-USA Summit!

As many of you know, a primary focus of The Well Project is to offer community support and advocacy development initiatives to address stigma, discrimination, and the need for enhanced leadership for women and girls. HIV treatment advocacy means many things to many people, but at its core, it focuses on optimizing the...

Disclosing to My Son

I told my son that I am HIV positive. It didn't go quite as I imagined. I had pictured him older and under different circumstances. But the opportunity presented itself and I followed through.

My son just turned 7 years old. He has been begging for a brother, nearly every day. He says it is boring...

It's just that simple...

I have fought tooth and nail with God over what HE wants from me. I keep saying I'm not worthy or deserving of the positions I'm placed in but it is truly HIS purpose and not mine. The truth is I'm scared. I'm afraid of what's to come. I've been lucky so far. No...

Full Steam Ahead!

It's amazing how you can be going hard for your cause, and then all of a sudden you have to stop, regroup, and get refocused! That's exactly what just recently happened to me. Standing tall, strong, and determined… against all Stigma and against all odds. It just didn't matter to me if you wanted...

Intercepting the Package...

I just want you to know, we truly tried to keep that package from you by intercepting the gift of HIV with education, condoms, and testing. We thought if we kept the stats of transmission, and the rate of STIs in your face, and the sounds of protection echoed in your ears, along with...

Domestic Violence/Abuse

"What kind of a mother are you," screamed a lady, "who can't even take care of a baby...sleeping all the time...kaamchor (lazy asshole)...keeping a babysitter, cook and maid...you can't even handle household chores or a husband, not to even speak of mothering a baby."

"Look, I will pay for your medication as and when I can,...

It's All Good In the Hood!

It's been a while. Lots has happened! And I'm just about to embark on a 3 week working holiday road trip and then a stay at KPS Trebullom so thought it's time to catch up and share. It's all good in the hood! In May I got great blood results - CD4 726 VL...

Facing Facebook

As I was sitting by the pool watching my son and nephew splash and play I saw my phone light up, alerting me to a notice on Facebook. I opened the notice and read a message that had been posted on my wall. A Facebook friend whom I had recently friended had posted on my wall...

Don't Have To Dress How You Feel

A Girl Like Me blogger, Justine.Did you know getting dressed up is a form of self-care? I literally did not think of it as self-care until now. Self-care to me is anything that brings me pleasure. Getting dressed up, nails, hair and makeup done is what makes me feel my...

Pleasure in Leather

Deer leather shoulder bag, handmade by Katie. As I'm sure many of you know by now that I live with severe depression and anxiety along with ADHD, OCD, and PTSD (damn, that's a lot of alphabet, lol), I can get down pretty easily and sink into the thoughts and feelings in...

Positive power

Many hands together in a circle. My lovely people,

Have you ever had a dilemma where you had to choose between what is best for you as a person or for us a HIV community? Last week I had to make such a choice. While getting ready for the 19th European...

And Then Life Went On...

Masonia Traylor.I was reflecting on myself and realized I'm willing to make the mistakes. It may not feel good when I do, however I learn so much from those mistakes. From believing in myself and the lack thereof at times. To holding grudges to venting to moving on. ...
