Lifetime Survivors of HIV

There are many thousands of adults living with HIV today who acquired HIV at birth or as young children. They are lifetime survivors of HIV (also known as Dandelions) – with issues that are similar to older long-term survivors who have lived with HIV since its earliest days, as well as their own unique concerns.

Porchia Dees was born HIV positive in 1986 in San Bernardino, CA. At the time there were no HIV medical specialists in her area so she had to be transferred all the way to Children’s Hospital, Los Angeles, where she received pediatric HIV medical care. The Office of Women's Health picked me for one of the ambassadors for National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. That is on March 10 every year so it's tomorrow. There are lots of ambassadors, a group of us.

August 1st will be my 25th anniversary of positively living with HIV! It hasn't always been a positive experience but I can now say I am very happy with my positive status.
