Flowers

Submitted on May 11, 2026 by KatieAdsila

A flower picked in its prime
Seems so sad its beauty will die
Not ready to let go of the time
It's all I can do not to cry

I don't remember petals falling
I didn't notice it go dry
But soon enough death came calling
I'm not ready to say goodbye

You want to give it water
To bring it back to life
Can't bear the slaughter
Of innocence in strife

So precious a soul
Whose light has passed
Beyond our control
Is how long will it last

But friend I'm not really speaking of flowers
I'm speaking of friends gone too soon
I know keeping them here is beyond our powers
Lost in their memories we swoon

People are still dying from HIV
The reasons why are beyond comprehension
We have the tools to set us free
But our barriers are too long to mention

I pray the day comes when I see
Their beautiful faces again
I know that day will come to be
The only question is when

We must keep striving for the cure
So no more of our friends must die
The day is coming to be sure
When our souls no longer need cry

I'll see you there when the day is here
We'll celebrate the lives we knew
So don't be anxious and full of fear
Because the days of HIV will soon be through

Dedicated to Kiara St James, Butch McKay and all who live and die with HIV
