My Never-Ending Battle With the Scale: My Journey to Better Health

Submitted on May 23, 2024 by  Marig2016

At the age of 11 I was diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and while it didn't make sense, it was explained that this is why I was "bigger" than all the other kids in my class. I can remember in my barely teen years going with my mom to the Curve classes... and from then on trying endless programs to help me lose weight.

As I got older, no matter how many programs I tried and being mindful of what I ate, sometimes to the point of starvation, nothing seemed to work. For years I inquired about weight loss surgery, and it was either never covered by my insurance or the out of pocket payment was way more than I could afford.

I've struggled with my weight for so long I began to feel defeated. It started taking a huge toll on not just my mental but my physical wellbeing and I knew it was time for drastic measures. While I've struggled with sharing the next part publicly, I'm reminded that people will ALWAYS have an opinion but what makes me special is my ability to be transparent and vulnerable, so here we are and ultimately this decision is for me and no one else.

At the time of this blog being published, I will be in route to Mexico in preparation for my weight loss surgery! Prior to the pre-op diet, I was at my heaviest and I had been having major knee issues for almost two years. It was finally time to put my health first and put my full faith in God!

I started the process earlier this year and I was met with so many hurdles and discouragement. I finally threw my hands up and surrendered to God. I said if this is for me Lord, you will have it be simple and stress free. Not even 24 hours later a friend shared with me about having had weight loss surgery almost one year ago and raved about the doctor and facility. I said what do I have to lose? I submitted a request for more information on a Thursday night and Friday afternoon I was on a call with the patient coordinator. That night around 9pm I completed the medical history form and by midnight I received an email that the doctor reviewed my information and approved me for surgery. Saturday afternoon the patient coordinator called me and we set the date for surgery: 5/24!

I am fully at peace with the process and the facility I've chosen to work with and have that unexplainable peace about it all. I'm grateful to God for his favor and seeing me through to this point. So, here's hello from Mexico!

I hope this blog encourages you to choose you and do whatever your heart desires in order to be the best and healthiest version of you!

My new motto for all the men: If you weren't checking for me before, don't check for me now. 😅🫶🏽
